PHP remains a practical choice for backend development despite its reputation. It powers a significant portion of the web, particularly small business websites and platforms like WordPress. The language offers strong job opportunities, especially for maintaining legacy systems and e-commerce sites, with relatively few new developers entering the field creating demand for PHP skills.

Is PHP the best back end language for you to use?

The best backend language is: non-existent.

There’s no such thing as the best one. Just the one we hate the least.

I’m bias because I love PHP, especially for back-end development. That said, the “best” is what’s best for the developer(s) and/or the project goals. It’s a little like saying “this is the best screwdriver” but perhaps you should be asking yourself if you even need a screwdriver. Always pick the right tools for the job, developers should not be limiting themselves to any one stack.

Surely not the best, but surely the most suited and It was built for it : the Web.
It’s also one of the easiest to learn.
But at the same time, as a legacy of the easyness, you have all the quirks (mixed bag of old and modern code). So you have to be somehow very carefull and pragmatic I guess ?
I solely assume that I’m not that at all hahaha

As for everything in tech, language is a tool, and a framework for that language is a philosophy that has the only aim to help you deliver ideas. If you’re down with OOP/D, backend panels and api development, there is no reason to look any further than Php + Laravel. We’re in the epoch of ecommerce websites, that in a great majority are built using Prestashop,Magento or WooCommerce - Php, again.
If you’re in need to build robust ETL, probably Php won’t be the best tool you can find out there, and you might want to focus on Python or Elixir.
As a web developer with a variety of needs, I tend to consider everything as a “boquet”, more than a monolith
