The Linux Cast

Linux is not just for developers — it's a viable platform for musicians, photo editors, video editors, and office workers. While Linux uses different applications than Windows or macOS (e.g., LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Word, GIMP/Krita instead of Photoshop, Kdenlive/DaVinci Resolve instead of Premiere), these alternatives allow non-developers to get real work done. The command line is also not a barrier, as most tasks can be accomplished through graphical interfaces.

Is Linux Only for Developers?

Linux works especially well for people who just need a browser and file management, basically a Chromebook replacement. I put Linux Mint on a relative’s laptop that was too old to support Windows 11 and it has been a better experience for her than Windows 10 was.

Windows for those who don’t know that a PC has an OS. Now, 99 percent of applications are cross-platform.
Linux has been suitable for all office work since 2010.
Since 2018, when Proton was added, it’s been suitable for gaming.
For developers, Linux is native 😎

I imagine normal users have no idea how much stuff they use is running on Linux.
Very little modern development is tied to windows these days in the future there will be less and less reasons for windows to be used.

Linux handles everyday tasks perfectly fine, but let’s be real : for professional creative workflows (Photoshop) or gaming, it still has limits. The progress is real and consistent, but it’s not quite there yet for every use case.
That’s exactly why dualboot makes so much sense, Linux for the day-to-day, Windows on standby for the rest.
And a PC struggling on Windows gets a real second life on Linux.
