Desktop development remains highly relevant in 2025, particularly for performance-critical applications in video editing, music production, gaming, and financial trading. While web-first approaches dominate consumer apps, desktop apps excel where direct system access, GPU utilization, and offline reliability are essential. Modern cross-platform frameworks like Tauri, Flutter, and .NET MAUI have evolved beyond bloated Electron apps, offering efficient native performance. Industries requiring high security, local data processing, and mission-critical functionality continue to rely heavily on desktop applications.

Is Desktop Development Still Relevant

Honestly, performance and control in this sense is a very nuanced property. If you actually build a proper web backend in like, Go or whatever, the web just makes the frontend easier, the likes of which should be a very “thin client” if necessary.
Because, you really just need to render a UI that asks a server politely to do all the heavy lifting for you. Unless you have a very peculiar application, this simply makes life simpler. In my mind, the web is an amazing “framework” for the client-server App model.
The main useful applications for desktop apps vs web apps are distinctly not client-server, such as a Game, compiler or other dev tools.
You’d need a weird app for you to not need a web app, though I really love building native stuff. I might try building a compiler sometime (don’t quote me on that 😆)

I don’t know… I just discovered how to make TUI client apps using Spectre for .NET and I’m blown away.
Others have mentioned it though… If I wanted to make some kind of an app using the TUI… Guess what… the TUI app has a REST API connection and it communicates with some <a href="http://ASP.NET" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">ASP.NET</a> or NodeJS server to do the heavy lifting and the TUI is just a thin client app.

Will try RN for desktop soon. I think desktop is super, but bruh… check where internet traffic is cooming from. That is not desktop at all… ;D It is almost like making an app compatible for internet explore in 2020 ;)
