A Harvard Business Review study conducted over eight months at a 200-person US tech company found that AI tools don't reduce workload — they intensify it. Workers completed existing tasks faster but filled the saved time with additional work they previously would have outsourced or avoided. AI also introduced multitasking patterns that raised implicit expectations around speed and output, without explicit managerial pressure.
