BitMaelum is a conceptual redesign of email from scratch, aiming to solve fundamental problems with the current email infrastructure. Key ideas include eliminating domain-based addressing so users can move between servers while keeping the same address, end-to-end encryption of both content and metadata, and a proof-of-work mechanism to make spam economically infeasible. The project is written in Go and is in early proof-of-concept stage, with experimental code available on GitHub.
