37signals open-sourced Upright, a synthetic monitoring system built as a Rails engine that runs health checks from multiple geographic locations. It supports Playwright browser tests, HTTP checks, SMTP probes, and traceroute monitoring, integrating with Prometheus, AlertManager, and Grafana. The system can be deployed to cheap VPS nodes worldwide using Kamal for around $20-110/month depending on configuration, offering a customizable alternative to commercial services like Pingdom.
