Microsoft Fabric now offers a public preview of the Migration Assistant for SQL database, enabling users to migrate on-premises SQL Server databases to SQL database in Fabric. The process uses a DAC pack file to migrate schema objects (tables, views, stored procedures), followed by a Copy Job with a data gateway to transfer the actual data. The demo shows a step-by-step walkthrough: uploading a .dacpac file, resolving schema compatibility issues (with optional Copilot assistance), creating a copy job, and finalizing the migration by re-enabling constraints and indexes. Current limitations include a 20 MB DAC pack file size cap supporting roughly 100k objects. Live connectivity from the Fabric portal to the source SQL Server is not yet available but is planned for future quarters.
