Migration Assistant for SQL Database in Fabric simplifies the journey from SQL Server to Fabric by providing an end‑to‑end, guided migration experience. It helps customers assess schema compatibility, proactively resolve issues with Copilot assistance, and move data using built‑in Fabric copy workflows—all within the Fabric portal. The result is faster time to value, fewer migration surprises, and a smoother path to modernizing SQL workloads in Fabric. Microsoft Fabric now offers a public preview of the Migration Assistant for SQL database, enabling users to migrate on-premises SQL Server databases to SQL database in Fabric. The process uses a DAC pack file to migrate schema objects (tables, views, stored procedures), followed by a Copy Job with a data gateway to transfer the actual data. The demo shows a step-by-step walkthrough: uploading a .dacpac file, resolving schema compatibility issues (with optional Copilot assistance), creating a copy job, and finalizing the migration by re-enabling constraints and indexes. Current limitations include a 20 MB DAC pack file size cap supporting roughly 100k objects. Live connectivity from the Fabric portal to the source SQL Server is not yet available but is planned for future quarters.
