AWS launched Amazon EBS Volume Clones, enabling instant point-in-time copies of EBS volumes within the same Availability Zone with a single API call. Previously, copying volumes required taking snapshots to S3 and creating new volumes from them. Volume Clones are available within seconds with immediate data access, making them ideal for development and testing environments. The feature supports all EBS volume types, works only with encrypted volumes, and creates crash-consistent copies. While useful for quick environment setup, EBS snapshots remain recommended for backup and disaster recovery due to their higher durability and cross-AZ protection.
