The title is somewhat misleading. It was not so much that spaghetti code supersedes (which is what I got from ‘beat’) clean code in a production environment, it is that developers should test early and test often and it seems that their ORM strategy or database design needed improvement. I do agree that infrastructure and observability (with a robust query performance metric) should be part of the initial planning.
Interesting side note. I was part of a project that depended on legacy C++ code that used absolutely no design patterns other than OOP (and poorly). The youtube host mentioned 4000 lines of spaghetti - try 8000 lines of if else statements embedded sometimes 7 levels deep with over 50 goto statements to manage flow.
When that code was ported to C# it failed miserably not to mention that the legacy and port code was spaghetti, made no distinction between backend and frontend - and I could go on.
In the final analysis, I think there is a delicate, if not artistic balance between OOP and functional programming that adheres to clean code and tackles a new project holistically with infrastructure leading the design.

I love how comments here and in yt are littered with “Clean code good, bad usage, bad senior, spaghetti code bad, unmaintainable, wisdom needed” despite this entire situation proved it’s just BS.
Over 14y I seen Clean Code projects so slow, so bloated with abstraction finding root of a bug was 4h effort. And this was OK for everyone. They just said “we are charging by hour”
Is this maintainable? Kind of, every dev know commonly agreed project structure. Everything else doesn’t matter. It can be slow, 60% of code can be copy-paste boilerplate to point actual business logic is buried in class constructor function call so hard it’s merely a 1 line in 9 lines of magical ritual of BS “more readable” mantra said by mindless cultist 😂

This is quite a weird story about one developer doing “clean code” and failing miserably at it. One sided story. There was no load testing, cache testing and frankly, the story does not pass the smell test. I think it is not true. There might well be truth in the story. I have worked at companies where a single developer could rewrite some large parts of a product over a weekend and it failed, some did not fail also. But that code never went into production directly.
I do believe this story not being true. The point of it is also sketchy, is it to promote bad code and it is ok if it works? That seems to be the case.
As for the story as it is told, why did it not cache correctly? Was that impossible fix? After all, the code was perfect as he claims. You simply fix the bugs. You load test it. It is easy. And without a doubt, it is easier to fix good code than a spaghetti crap.
Bad story, told in a smug way.

Ha ha… that’s why I’m writing for some time only procedural and functional code that my colleagues claim is “spaghetti”. Mine always works - good enough.
