But here’s the thing: that wasn’t some freak accident. It was the natural outcome of a flawed model I’ve seen up close.
I used to work at a platform just like it.
Let’s call it No Code Snake Oil Company.
The pitch was clean: “Describe your app idea, and we’ll help you build it - no code needed.” It was AI-wrapped, UI-polished, investor-baiting gold.
But behind the scenes? It was duct tape, outsourcing, and burned clients all the way down.
This post isn’t just about one company. It’s about a whole industry that keeps recycling the same false promise - and why new age LLM based AI isn’t going to save it either.
<h2>Step 1: The Illusion of Simplicity</h2>
It always starts the same way:
You sign up. The onboarding flow asks a few slick questions. You get a dashboard with drag-and-drop features, maybe even a chatbot that says, “Let’s build your dream app together.”
But behind that friendly UI is a bloated mess of prebuilt libraries. You’re not building a product. You’re stitching together a fragile template and calling it software.
And for a while, it works - just enough to give you hope.
<h2>Step 2: The Complexity Wall</h2>
Every “no code” platform hits this moment:

<li>A client wants real-time notifications.</li>
<li>Or custom user permissions.</li>
<li>Or integrations with an external tool.</li>
</ul>
And suddenly… you hit the wall.
The builder wasn’t designed for your logic. The drag-and-drop stops working. The AI stops helping. You’re now staring at a half-working app and a pile of config errors you don’t understand.
That’s when the real play begins.
<h2>Step 3: The “Just Hire Us” Pivot</h2>
At Snake Oil Co., we called it “MVP rescue mode.”
Once the platform hits its limit - and it always does - the sales team swoops in with the offer:

What they don’t say? They’re not doing the work. Your project gets handed off to a third-party agency we partnered with. Sometimes offshore. Sometimes underqualified.
You started with a no-code tool. You ended with a bloated monorepo that no one fully owns.
<h2>Step 4: The Burnout Loop</h2>
The agency tries to patch the app. But it was never meant to scale.
So what do they do? They wrap your broken app with even more custom code, sometimes in a completely different framework. The original tool becomes dead weight. And now you’re stuck with:

AI builders are the new no-code. Same promise, different packaging:

And sure - for toy projects, it’s impressive. You might get a basic CRUD app. A prototype. A dashboard shell.

Hit the same wall as before, now even faster.
<h2>The Core Lie: “You Don’t Need to Know Tech”</h2>
This is the lie that fuels both no-code and AI builders.
That you can build software without understanding it.
That product thinking, technical architecture, and system design are optional.
They’re not.
What happens instead is that people build apps they can’t maintain, businesses they can’t scale, and products they can’t explain.
The tools aren’t bad - the narrative around them is.
<h2>Let’s Be Real: The Stack Always Shows Up</h2>
No matter how good the interface, the stack is always there underneath. And eventually, someone has to deal with it.
If it’s not you, it’s an outsourced agency.
If it’s not now, it’s when you raise money and your CTO says, “We need to rebuild this from scratch.”
And if it’s never? Then you’re just another ghost MVP floating in the graveyard of startup dashboards that couldn’t scale.
<h2>What Should You Actually Do Instead?</h2>
Here’s a better model - especially if you’re non-technical:

<li>Start manual: Use spreadsheets, forms, and scrappy hacks to test your idea.</li>
<li>Understand the workflows: Document what actually happens in your app.</li>
<li>Treat tools like scaffolding: Not the foundation. Prototype fast, but build intentionally.</li>
<li>Bring in tech help early: Even a 1-hour consult from a dev can save you weeks of rework.</li>
<li>Use AI as a speed boost: Not a crutch. Let it augment your thinking, not replace it.</li>
</ul>
<h2>AI Can’t Think For You</h2>
AI isn’t going to build your startup.
Not in 2025. Not without you putting in the thinking first.
And if a platform tells you it can - without any tradeoffs, risks, or constraints - then congratulations.

I think the article picture sums up the AI experience quite accurately. It looks just fine at first glance, and it was generated in seconds, but if you look closer, you notice the code is displayed on the wrong side of the screen.
The reason: AI doesn’t really KNOW what it’s doing. It gets the basics right, but it misses bits of context, that a person would find obvious. And telling it to fix the issue often only makes more mess.
In the end, you have fix stuff yourself. Sometimes that’s still a lot faster than doing everything from scratch. Sometimes it’s the opposite, as you’re given starting point that is fundamentally flawed.
Either way, you can never trust AI to do the whole job.

I don’t understand the need to replace people with bots. It’s not just our field. Many people would be effected. Nice to seem them fall on their face though. 😁
