Microsoft's Project Silica aims to store data in quartz glass for thousands of years using laser-written voxels read back with polarization-sensitive microscopes. A DVD-sized glass platter can hold ~7 TB. Recent advances show the technology now works with ordinary borosilicate glass (like Pyrex), writing is more efficient, and reading requires only one camera instead of three. The project explores birefringent voxel writing and phase voxels as key techniques.
