The computerized air traffic control system evolved from the Air Force SAGE defense system in 1959 through the SATIN program. IBM developed the 9020, a cluster of System 360 computers with shared memory buses and redundant elements, to create a unified national air traffic system. The 9020 served for decades before being replaced by the IBM 3083, which retained the same software and displays but updated the hardware. The system's architecture featured private and shared memory pools across computing elements to handle massive data processing requirements.
