Inkle co-founder Jon Ingold revealed that TR-49, the studio's latest narrative deduction game priced at £6, broke even within three hours of launch. The rapid recoup was possible due to an extremely low production budget — nine months of development, minimal assets, heavy narrative focus, and voice acting as the main external cost. Ingold and co-founder Joseph Humfrey also exclude their own salaries from individual title budgets. Ingold reflects on shifting consumer price perceptions on Steam versus mobile, noting that Steam's historically permissive spending culture may be changing, and suggests the only viable path for premium mobile games is very low pricing. He hints Inkle's next project won't be bigger or more expensive, though he suspects TR-49 may have been slightly underpriced.
