Indonesia has announced age-gated social media regulations, restricting children under 13 from all platforms, allowing those 13+ access to lower-risk platforms, and limiting higher-risk platforms (YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X, Roblox, and others) to users 16 and older. Unlike Australia's outright ban, Indonesia's approach targets platforms rather than penalizing children or parents. The rules are set to be signed on March 28, 2026, with enforcement beginning one year later. The move is part of a broader global trend, with countries like Denmark, Spain, France, Malaysia, and the UK also introducing similar restrictions. The government cited UNICEF data showing roughly half of Indonesian children have encountered sexual content online.
