WebMCP is a proposed web standard that allows websites to expose structured tools directly to in-browser AI agents, replacing brittle DOM scraping and UI automation with explicit function calls. Sites can register tools imperatively via JavaScript or declaratively by annotating HTML forms with tool metadata. The browser translates these into schemas that agents can discover and invoke with proper inputs/outputs. Currently available as an early preview in Chrome 146 Canary behind a flag, it includes features like agent-aware form submission, structured error handling, and visual feedback via CSS pseudo-classes. The standard aims to make web apps function as both human UIs and structured tool surfaces for AI agents.
