I write my code in the controller

The junior -&gt; mid -&gt; senior -&gt; lead experience curve is really something.
Junior - write all your logic inside the controller methods.
Mid - move some of the logic out into services.
Senior - keep your controller methods as small as possible.
Lead - It depends.

I understand his point, and it’s valid when you’re working alone on small projects.
Trying to apply this logic to larger projects with a team means exposing yourself to major maintainability problems very quickly.
I find it hard to take seriously these solo-developers who want to give advice on good maintainability practices.

I’m glad to see that he’s testing his code!! That is the overriding issue for me when considering business logic in the controller (which I tell my team to NOT do) it’s frequently harder to test! If the controller is just a ‘pass through’ almost directly to the service then the controller doesn’t need explicit testing and I can focus on testing the service and the calls to those methods are much simpler from the test harness.

If you are using a framework for your controllers, generally most of the logic necessary can be done via annotations on your endpoints. However, this doesn’t apply to every framework of course. To me, it makes the most sense to let your business logic live in the service layer and not the controller. It’s just much easier to maintain in my experience.
