As long as you're gaming within specific resolutions and refresh rates, HDMI 2.1 is just as capable as DisplayPort.

A PC gamer defends using HDMI 2.1 instead of DisplayPort for their gaming setup. HDMI 2.1 supports 4K at up to 144Hz without DSC, HDR, and VRR (including FreeSync and G-Sync), making it fully capable for most gaming scenarios. When a monitor's DisplayPort is already occupied by other devices and the refresh rate cap is 144Hz, there is no practical reason to prefer DisplayPort over HDMI 2.1.

<p>For me it is more like old habit and reuse what I’ve got (cables). If I moved to HDMI 2.1 I have to through away all DP cables and new GPU that support HDMI 2.1. But yeah, when I have new GPU I definitely buy HDMI 2.1 cable. I tried my friend setup with both DP and 2.1 and both just fine.</p>


<p>Displayport is an open standard where as HDMI is a closed / licensed standard. Thats the main difference at this point. I’m pretty sure theres HDMI 2.0 ports that are basically 2.1 ports but they don’t have the certification offically.</p>
