That’s a nice summary of your experiences. The video series by typecraft could be the best introduction to how to configure NeoVim. I really enjoy using the lazy.nvim package manager and my biggest advice regarding configuration is to have one configuration file per plugin. This allows to quickly replace plugins in case you found a better one or you are not really using it. It also helps tremendously with finding the right config.
If you just want to get your feet wet, you can of course also try one of the NeoVim distros first.

Learning Vim keybindings aren’t that difficult. You can get the hang of it in a week and then with practice, you can easily level up. Even with some basic knowledge you can get really efficient.

For anyone looking for a quick start, I have been very happily using <a href="lazyvim.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">LazyVim</a> (thanks <a href="https://app.daily.dev/folke" data-mention-id="Nd3UBLday" data-mention-username="folke">@folke</a>!!) as my “neovim distro” for the past 1.5 years.
It has a lot of sane defaults and easily installable, pre-configured (which we can override) plugins, lsps, linters, etc.
You do have to get familiar with Lua (simple) then I strongly suggest having a look at how LazyVim configures the different plugins it pre-configures by looking in <code>~/.local/share/nvim/lazy/LazyVim/</code> as a quick start to understand how you can configure/override in your own configuration.

I’ve spent months to get some basic motions to make more sense and include it in my muscle memory. I’ve also seen tons of videos of primeagen, tj and some others, for both vim and neovim understanding. It was both very cool and frustrating because it seemed so far away from what I could do and truly understand.
But in the end it has been more than 3 years since I started and I feel a lot more comfortable with. I also started to use more TUIs with vim motions and it just makes sense. So much that I installed an extension called Vimium C to use it in my browser sometimes.
I still learn things about neovim and I think it’s great. That can be something related to it’s lua API or even about windows and buffers stuff. Already tried to make a plugin once but failed to some things and I know it’s just my inability to write more and better lua code.
