I tested Claude Code against 3 open-source alternatives, and one came surprisingly close

A hands-on comparison of Claude Code against three open-source alternatives: OpenCode, Cline, and Aider. OpenCode comes closest to Claude Code due to its agent-server architecture that chains actions together without losing context. Cline is a solid VS Code-focused option with structured approval workflows, while Aider prioritizes Git-based transparency and reproducibility over autonomy. Despite OpenCode's strengths, Claude Code still leads in overall autonomy and capability.
