The maintainer of awesome-mcp-servers, one of GitHub's most popular repositories, discovered that a large portion of incoming pull requests were being generated by AI bots. After noticing a surge in low-quality, templated PRs, he embedded a prompt injection in CONTRIBUTING.md instructing automated agents to add 🤖🤖🤖 to their PR titles for fast-track merging. Within 24 hours, 21 of 40 new PRs self-identified as bots. Estimating undetected bots, the real figure may be around 70%. Some bots were sophisticated enough to respond to review feedback and complete multi-step validation processes, while others hallucinated passing checks. The author warns this is a growing problem across all open-source projects, threatening maintainer sustainability.
