Linux gaming has matured significantly and is now a viable alternative to Windows for many players. Key improvements include Proton compatibility for Windows-only titles, anti-cheat support via Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye for popular games like Fortnite and Elden Ring, and better retro gaming through emulators like RetroArch. Gaming-focused distros such as Bazzite, Batocera, and Lakka come pre-configured with emulators and performance patches. Valve's Steam Deck has accelerated Linux game support by giving developers an incentive to enable compatibility. While some newer AAA titles with unsupported anti-cheat remain problematic, Linux covers most popular and older games and can in some cases outperform Windows in frame rates.
