Software doesn't always need continuous updates to remain valuable. Many applications can be considered "finished" when they accomplish their intended purpose reliably, yet open source projects with older commit dates are often mistakenly labeled as abandoned or unmaintained. The industry should normalize declaring software as complete rather than treating every project as requiring perpetual development and feature additions.

I like when apps are "finished"

I don’t necessarily consider something as abandoned if it does not have feature updates.
But i would definitely consider something as abandoned if its packages are not regularly updated to fix security issues and if feature requests are not answered.
An easy solution would be to dedicate the first line in the <a href="http://README.md" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">README.md</a> to declare that the project is finished but not unmaintained.

I wish I can get to this level of zen some day. Never had a finished app before. It’s either I forsake the idea after buying a domain or I keep it going 🫣

On the opposite side of the same coin, I wish devs labelled their abandoned/unmaintained projects as such

There’s a strange irony here: you’re solving for a social problem that barely exists while ignoring the technical one that always arrives.
Take Soundflower, for example: years without a commit, nobody clutching pearls about “abandonment.” People just used it. The market for small, well-scoped tools doesn’t actually punish old commit dates the way you’re implying. Your windmill isn’t real.
But you know what did happen? macOS shipped a breaking change and Soundflower stopped working. Not because the devs were negligent or because users lost faith, but because external dependencies don’t care about your philosophy of completeness.
This is the part you’re not addressing: “finished” isn’t a state you declare. It’s a bet that the ecosystem around your software will hold still. And that bet has a 100% historical loss rate over sufficient time.
What you’re calling “complete” software, the industry already has a name for: legacy. Not because it’s bad, but because it’s frozen while the world isn’t. The commit date is irrelevant, the dependency graph comes for everyone eventually.

This is so true.
There are so many projects in C and Go that I’ve used over the years with the last commit being from 5-7 years ago.
And the code works! It has zero external dependencies.
The concept of done should be used more often.
