A researcher at the University of Limerick developed a drone-based plastic litter detection system for beaches. Using machine learning and computer vision, the system can identify plastic debris as small as 1cm from 30 metres altitude, distinguishing it from natural objects like seaweed and driftwood. A free mobile app (iOS and Android) displays GPS coordinates of detected plastic on an interactive map, enabling community volunteers to target clean-up efforts precisely. The platform accepts drone footage from any source, processes it on standard laptops, and has been deployed across nine countries through the EU-funded BluePoint project, engaging over 2,000 people. Gamification elements have boosted volunteer participation, and collected data is informing local authority policy on waste management and coastal protection.
