I’ve been grinding on a 3D fighting game project in Godot 4.5, and I just hit a major milestone — my AI can actually fight!
What’s Working So Far:

<li>Custom State Machine - Clean FSM handling idle, walk, jump, attacks, hitstun</li>
<li>AI with Multiple Difficulties - Easy to Expert with different reaction times</li>
<li>Full Combat System - Light/medium/heavy punches &amp; kicks with combo chains</li>
<li>Stamina System - Dash management (ground + air dashes)</li>
<li>Hit Effects - Frame freeze, screen shake that scales with combo count</li>
<li>Dynamic Camera - Auto-adjusts based on fighter distance</li>
<li>Hitbox/Hurtbox Detection - Precise collision with attack strength variants

Engine: Godot 4.5 (GDScript with strict typing)
Models: Low-poly characters with Mixamo animations
Architecture: State pattern, component-based systems
Physics: Custom 2.5D fighter physics (locked Z-axis)
The Grind:
Everything’s coded from scratch — no asset packs, no shortcuts. Just learning by building. The toughest parts so far:
Animation timing - Getting hitboxes to activate at the exact right frame
AI combo logic - Making CPU opponents feel “human” with imperfect inputs
Camera smoothing - Keeping both fighters on screen during fast movement
What’s Next:
Character select screen
Special moves &amp; super meter
Training mode with frame data
Online netcode (rollback if I’m brave enough 😅)
