Hype or not, Mythos is a wake-up call for South African CISOs

Anthropic's Claude Mythos model — leaked via a configuration error and now restricted to select customers including US federal agencies — is being used as a lens to examine South Africa's cybersecurity readiness. Whether or not Mythos lives up to its hype, the broader trend of AI-accelerated vulnerability discovery is real and the economics of attack are outpacing defence. South African organisations, particularly in the public sector and mid-market, lag significantly on patching cycles, architectural security maturity, and continuous monitoring. The piece argues that AI's near-term enterprise impact will be felt most acutely in cybersecurity, and that treating security as a periodic audit function is no longer viable.
