Microsoft developed an AI-powered framework called COBOL Agentic Migration Factory (CAMF) to modernize legacy COBOL applications into modern Java/Quarkus code. The system uses specialized AI agents built on Semantic Kernel - a COBOL analyzer, dependency mapper, and Java converter - that work together to understand legacy code structure and generate cloud-ready applications. Tested with Danish banking company Bankdata, the approach addresses traditional challenges like limited COBOL expertise, high costs, and complex dependencies by automating analysis and transformation while keeping organizations in control of their modernization projects.
