OpenShift Virtualization can replicate VMware's Raw Device Mapping (RDM) functionality using SAN array CSI drivers. By mounting volumes as LUNs with the reservation flag enabled, VMs get on-the-wire I/O performance and SCSI3 persistent reservation support. The approach supports shared volumes, snapshots, and live migration. Three migration strategies are covered for moving RDM-based VMs to OpenShift: MTV with storage offload, static provisioning of existing LUNs as persistent volumes, and gradually growing the cluster on the OpenShift side while decommissioning VMware VMs.
