In my opinion, Super Meat Boy did it perfectly. A tutorial shouldn’t feel like a tutorial. It shouldn’t tell players what to do or even force them to do this or that otherwise you can’t do anything.
Design your first levels or scenes or missions so, that you teach the player by letting them figure it out. Like “oh, there is a gun, let me pick it up” and a bit later you will encounter your first enemy “oh, I got this gun, I can use it to kill this enemy.” instead of “Here is a gun, pick it up or we won’t let you use any UI including the settings” and “this is a enemy, it is dangerous, we pause the game and tell you with text because we think you are fucking stupid and now we also tell you to click left mouse button to shoot. make sure to aim at THIS spot to hit the enemy, ready? click Space to continue your game”.
