Claude Code's agent skills feature lets you create reusable markdown files that Claude Code automatically applies across projects for repetitive tasks like explaining code with diagrams, drafting emails, or generating content in your style. Skills live in a ~/.claude/skills folder, each as a named subfolder with a SKILL.md file containing a name and description. Claude Code detects relevant skills automatically, saving tokens when a skill isn't applicable. You can also add reference markdown files and executable scripts inside a skill for advanced automation. Anthropic provides a public skills repository with examples, including a skill-creator skill that interactively generates new skills for you.
