How to become an expert in anything?

Great stuff. I have suffered from the imposter syndrome many times in my 2 decade + career. Also, I have run into engineers that truly don’t know what they don’t know - yet they truly believe they are software artisan ninjas that are the sole possessors of the ability to create the best software. This is because mommy and daddy at home call them the “tech guy” and always bombard s/he with the “you’re so smart” comment because they wired up Google Ring.

What this model illustrates well is that once you start feeling like an impostor who doesn’t know much at all about a topic, that means you’ve already moved out of the beginner level, because you know what you don’t know. Having that feeling of insecurity about how much you don’t know is actually a good thing, because that means you (1) know what you should be looking at to progress, and (2) feel a motivation to do so in order to stop feeling like such an impostor.
A lot of people do get stuck at this stage, because it can feel like there’s a mountain to climb and it’s all just too much. The perspective of already having ascended the foothills often doesn’t help much. The trick is to only now and then look at the mountain to stay on course, and most of the time look at your feet and just take things one step at a time. Learn by doing every day, or even every other day, and after 10 years you end up being someone others look up to as an expert. Put differently, climbing one flight of stairs every day for ten years is just as much climbing as getting to the top of mount Everest. Just keep moving and try to have fun.
Another trap I’ve seen people fall into is not learning by doing. You can read blogs and watch videos for years and still not have picked up many expert skills. The brain only really picks up a skill by doing the thing. It is better to watch just one or two tutorials and then try some things, even if those attempts are embarrassing, then to watch dozens of tutorials before taking a first stab. All first attempts are terrible, that just leaves lots of room to improve.
