I agree 100% that Product Market Fit, OSS community engagement, and education were key to Terraform’s success and they were masterfully executed.
However, it’s also true that HashiCorp wasn’t a complete ‘unknown’ when they released Terraform - they had already released Vagrant and Packer, so they had already started building a community.

HashiCorp is the Apple of software tooling, their focus on developer experience is incredible and not matched on the market.
The incredible thing is that most of as use their product for 0$
