In this post, I’ll share how Tailwind CSS made building responsive layouts simpler, faster, and way more fun (especially for beginners like me!).
🐣 What Is Tailwind CSS?
Tailwind CSS is a utility-first CSS framework. That means instead of writing your own CSS, you use small, ready-made classes directly in your HTML or JSX to style elements.

In one line, I’ve :-
Set a background color
Added padding
Centered the text
Made the padding bigger on medium-sized screens (md:p-8)
Pretty cool, right?
🎯 Why Tailwind Helped Me as a Beginner

<li>No More Custom CSS (at least not much) Before Tailwind, I had to write CSS like this:</li>
</ol>
.box {
background-color: #f0f8ff;
padding: 1rem;
text-align: center;
}
And then link it to my HTML:
&lt;div class=“box”&gt;Hello!&lt;/div&gt;
Now I just do:
&lt;div class=“bg-blue-100 p-4 text-center”&gt;Hello!&lt;/div&gt;
It saves time and helps me learn what each style does as I write it.

With Tailwind, you use breakpoints like sm, md, lg to change styles on different screen sizes — no confusing media queries needed!

This text changes size based on screen width.

This helped me make websites look great on mobile phones , tablets , and desktops without guessing or Googling media query syntax every time.

<li>Less Switching Between Files</li>

Before:
write HTML → switch to CSS → back to HTML → test
Now:
just write everything in one place!
This makes it way easier to see what’s going on — especially when you’re learning.
🧪 Real Example from My Project
When I built a simple dashboard layout, this code gave me a responsive sidebar + content layout: I create this in react

&lt;aside className=“w-full md:w-1/4 bg-gray-100 p-4”&gt;
Sidebar
&lt;/aside&gt;

✅ On mobile: the sidebar stacks on top
✅ On desktop: the sidebar moves to the left side
All without writing a single media query!
💡 What I Learned
Tailwind CSS made responsive design less scary
I spent more time building and less time debugging
It helped me understand layout concepts better through practice

you can do everything with css that tailwind has and does, if tailwind is easier for you then great, but learn CSS well and then every css framework will be easy to understand and use

Thank you ritika, for very helpful article. I also used to struggle alot with CSS. But with Tailwind it became easy for me to.

Tailwind really blows my mind. But then while solving the styling problem we are left with new problem, long class names in html (no big deal).
However, I read in the Refactoring UI book that we should srop using hex for colors, and use hsl instead, which are easier to use if you want different shades of color, because instead of having absolute values of rgb (which would be impossible to relate in hex), in hsl colors are on color wheel starting from red and dimension is angle from starting point, so green is 120 blue 240 red 0 or 360, this is called hue, and then you have saturation and lightness, so different shades of blue will always be h 240 and so on…

If your project doesn’t have component based UI than you are in for a lot of pain down the road.
I see people saying use @apply to shorten your classes, how is it any different from writing your own css for a class.
