Specific (YC F25) is a cloud platform for coding agents that automatically provisions infrastructure including databases. They chose Neon as their database layer for two key reasons: scale-to-zero (critical when most agent-created apps get abandoned) and instant branching for isolated preview environments. Specific now manages over 10,000 Neon databases, with new projects provisioning within a second via the Neon API. The agent never directly accesses connection strings — Specific handles wiring environment variables automatically. The platform mirrors local and production environments, and uses Neon branches for per-pull-request previews with production data in isolation.
