Tailscale's macOS app icon could silently disappear into the MacBook notch area, causing user confusion. Since Apple provides no developer API to control menu bar icon placement or detect notch occlusion directly, Tailscale used NSWindow's occlusionState notification to detect when the icon was hidden and display a pop-up warning. The post shares the Swift code behind this workaround and announces the general availability of a new windowed macOS interface (version 1.96.2) that largely sidesteps the problem by providing a full Dock-accessible UI with device search, Taildrop, exit node management, and more.
