REST is short for REpresentational State Transfer. Roy Fielding used the term to describe the network architecture of the world wide web. He was describing the web as it existed at that time, with HTML being exchanged over HTTP as people "surfed the web" Today, when someone uses the term REST, they are nearly always discussing a JSON-based API.

Actually frightening when you think about it.

A classical architecture purity rant. People mostly do not use HATEOAS because it is hard to implement, it couples the presentation layer with the processing layer, and while there is beauty in it, sometimes it does not add a competitive advantage to the software product.
I remember when I felt bad because I didn’t follow all of Evans’ domain model rules or all OOP design principles like Liskov or Open-Closed. In my case, I stopped caring about architecture purity over the years.
For RESTful services, I find the Richardson REST Maturity Model more useful than ranting about whether an API is or isn’t RESTful. It helps you identify which features of REST an API supports and , based on that, how to use it nicely.
