KubeVirt and Kube-OVN CNI can automate the lifecycle management of AWS EKS hybrid nodes running in on-premises datacenters. KubeVirt provides VM instance pools with cloud-init support for automated node provisioning, while Kube-OVN handles IP address management and exposes VMs directly to physical networks without NAT. The setup involves installing Kube-OVN CNI, KubeVirt operator, and shared storage, then creating VM pools that use nodeadm to join EKS clusters. SSM credentials are stored as Kubernetes secrets and mounted into VMs via virtiofs. This approach enables scaling hybrid nodes using kubectl commands, though automatic scaling based on EKS cluster metrics remains challenging due to control plane separation.
