Heroku future in doubt as Salesforce freezes features to focus on AI

Salesforce has announced that Heroku is transitioning to a 'sustaining engineering model,' meaning no new enterprise contracts will be accepted and no new features are planned. The company is redirecting investment toward enterprise-grade AI. Existing enterprise subscriptions will continue to be honored, and pay-as-you-go customers are still accepted. The move has disappointed the developer community, with concerns that the next-generation Fir runtime will never reach non-enterprise customers. Heroku, founded in 2007 and acquired by Salesforce in 2010, was a pioneer in easy PaaS deployment. Alternatives like Fly.io, Render, Vercel, and Netlify exist but are seen as not fully replacing Heroku's PaaS model.
