A brief question seeking personal experiences and insights from developers who have migrated from Windows to Linux operating systems.

Has anyone switched from Windows to Linux?

I did and I’ve been loving it for the last 20 years. 😁
Jokes aside (I did switch 20 years ago, though, and I’m at it ever since), the experience is always bumpy at the beginning.
There’s no way, you can just switch and pretend it’s the same system. It very different, but the basic tasks can be learnt quickly. A good desktop environment choice is key here - it needs to have the full experience from the start. GNOME and KDE are your friends here - while I’m more of a “GNOME person” (given the two at least, as I use Sway on a daily basis), KDE is the closest in terms of Windows user experience compatibility (GNOME has it’s distinquishable features that make it quite different, e.g. no tray icons). I would recommend KDE for first-time users switching from Windows.
From here, it’s setting your self up and knowing the ropes. A good choice of a desktop environment helps a lot here - it gets the 80% of the things out of the way (daily usage things like internet browsing, app installation, etc.). That’s where the exploration begins. And no need to rush it - learn things on a “need to know” basis, as they’re required. Only after that, can you try experimenting with different desktop environments, customizations, etc. It’s like moving to a new apartment - first you take care of the basic things to go on day by day. When that’s done, you start decorating and making it truly your own.
One thing people tend to do is overwhelming themselves with stuff they want to do all at once. No one can take in a big amount of knowledge at a single moment and that, I think, is the critical moment where “the switch” can fail.

I was also a bit scared about the switch so I got duel boot on my laptop a couple months ago with Windows 11 and Ubuntu.
I found that, as time went on, I opened Windows less and less (only if I still had files I needed on that file system), until it randomly broke and now only Ubuntu works
I switched because my friend saw how I was using Windows and said that I’m trying to use it like Linux
He’s right. Almost everything I love to mess with is an install manual on Windows and copy-pasting 2 commands on Linux

I’ve switched couple years ago from Windows to Linux on my work laptop. Now working also on client’s MacBook and I still love to work on Linux.
Sometimes it’s harder than on Windows (e.g. when hardware doesn’t work out of the box like my Bluetooth headphones) but I love feeling of freedom and performance which seems to be better than on Windows.
Comparing to OS X - Linux is still my first choice.

it pretty much depends on the type of work you have to do.
if your work is kind of lonely and you don’t have to interact with too many people, then Linux can be really good for you. if you have to be in a lot of meetings and video calls using all kind of platforms, you might find yourself in a bit of pain trying to make all your apps and devices work as expected.
the first question you should ask yourself is why do you want to leave windows? is there something you hate about windows or did you find something that you like about linux?

My experience with Linux in the 2000s was not good, but most drivers work with Linux without CDs. Graphics cards are also supported. There is a possibility that software used with Windows may not work, but that is about the only concern I have about switching to Linux.
