Chinese national Xu Zewei, accused of conducting cyberattacks on behalf of China's Ministry of State Security, has been extradited to the United States after being arrested in Italy. Xu is alleged to have worked with the Hafnium (later Silk Typhoon) hacking group, targeting U.S. universities to steal COVID-19 research and exploiting Microsoft Exchange zero-days to compromise over 12,700 organizations including defense contractors, law firms, and think tanks. He is currently detained in Houston, Texas, awaiting prosecution by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas. China's Foreign Ministry has opposed the extradition, calling the charges fabricated.
