I chose Bitbucket back in the day, because I thought Atlassian were doing great work and really valued developers and the community. Not sure what tough choices they came up against needing to hobble their free plan, but maybe it was being abused. In any case, I’m sad to be moving off the platform - but I have always wanted to try a self-hosted alternative, which I might try before migrating to GitHub.

I had the same experience as you, ultimately I reckon you will prefer having your self-hosted instance. Good luck! 👍️

We moved out when they stopped supporting Mercurial. We were there because of it, but once they discontinued support, we migrated all our repositories to Git and settled on GitHub.

Not that my way is anything special, but I keep everything in git, back it all up to my Synology NAS with syncthing, then push everything private to my free instance of <a href="http://VisualStudio.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">VisualStudio.com</a> and anything public (or just don’t care if it ended up public) to github.

I feel like I missed something.
Are these restrictions really so bad? They seem rather reasonable for a free service.
My perception of Atlassian is generally very negative and I always considered a Bitbucket to be “the lame one”.
I was on it myself. The specs were good. But I never enjoyed it and it always felt like the low budget option. I mean, who wants to use something that feels like Jira if they don’t have to?
