The grep command is an acronym for 'Global Regular Expression Print' that originated in the 1970s when Bell Labs researcher Lee McMahon needed to analyze the Federalist Papers for authorship identification. Ken Thompson created grep by extracting the search functionality from the ed text editor to solve McMahon's memory limitations and multi-file processing needs. The tool was developed overnight and later became one of the most essential Unix utilities, though Thompson initially considered it too niche for general use.
