GRAI, a new AI music startup backed by $9M in seed funding from Khosla Ventures and others, is taking a different approach to AI music than competitors like Suno and Udio. Rather than generating music from scratch, GRAI focuses on social music interaction — letting fans remix tracks, change styles, and share with friends. The company, founded by the team behind VOCHI (acquired by Pinterest), is building a 'derivatives pipeline' and real-time audio systems that preserve original track identity while enabling transformation. Crucially, GRAI is working with labels and artists first to ensure opt-in/opt-out control, aiming to create new royalty streams rather than replace artists. Its target audience is Gen Z and Gen Alpha users who want to participate in music culture without becoming full creators.
