Canada's Kepler Communications has launched the largest orbital compute cluster ever built — 10 satellites linked by space-to-space lasers carrying 40 Nvidia GPUs. Partnering with Sophia Space, which builds passively cooled space computers (solving the vacuum cooling problem), the cluster can run AI inference directly in orbit rather than sending raw data to Earth. This enables faster response times for missile defense and Earth observation, and represents a first practical step toward space-based data centers as terrestrial data centers face bans over power and water consumption.
