GPTZero analyzed 4,841 papers accepted to NeurIPS 2025 and identified at least 100 containing confirmed hallucinations in their citations. These hallucinations include fabricated author names, incorrect arXiv IDs linking to different papers, fake DOIs and URLs, non-existent publications in legitimate venues, and incomplete or incorrect bibliographic information. The analysis reveals systematic issues with AI-generated citations in academic papers, where references appear plausible but don't correspond to real publications or contain mixed accurate and fabricated metadata.
