Google has introduced AppFunctions, a Jetpack API in early beta that lets Android developers expose self-describing app capabilities for AI agents to invoke on-device. This forms the basis of Google's 'agent-first' OS vision, where AI assistants like Gemini can fulfill user goals by calling app functions directly. On-device execution improves privacy and reduces latency. For apps not yet integrated, Google also provides a UI automation fallback layer requiring zero developer effort. Features are currently available on Galaxy S26 and planned for broader rollout with Android 17.
