Google is previewing Comments to SQL, a new AI-powered feature in BigQuery that converts natural-language instructions written in SQL comments into executable queries. Users write instructions inside comment blocks (/* */), then use the Gemini integration to generate corresponding SQL code with a diff view showing the translation. The feature aims to speed up data analysis by reducing the time spent writing complex queries, though it still requires structured comment syntax rather than free-form natural language. This follows other AI additions to BigQuery, including managed AI functions (AI.IF, AI.CLASSIFY, AI.SCORE) and data engineering/science agents. Competitors like Databricks, Snowflake, and Oracle are also integrating AI capabilities into their data warehouse platforms.
