Google released the first draft of Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard enabling AI agents to order and pay for goods online. Developed with major retailers like Shopify, Target, and Walmart, plus payment providers including Stripe and Visa, UCP exposes REST endpoints for checkout sessions. While retailers are eager to experiment with agentic commerce through platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini, the protocol introduces security challenges including new attack surfaces, API gateway requirements, and the need for agent authorization frameworks.
