Google’s New Tool Just 10x’d Claude Code

Google released an open-source Google Workspace CLI (GWS CLI) that gives AI coding tools like Claude Code direct terminal-level access to Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Calendar. The tool ships with 100+ pre-built multi-step workflow recipes and uses JSON-structured responses optimized for AI agents. Setup involves creating a Google Cloud project, configuring OAuth credentials, enabling relevant APIs, and authenticating via the CLI. Once installed, Claude Code can create formatted Google Docs, triage emails by priority, build slide decks with visual validation via screenshots, and automate complex cross-service workflows — all through bash commands rather than API calls or MCP configs.
