Google has expanded Canvas in AI Mode to all U.S. users in English, after initially launching it as a Google Labs experiment. Canvas lets users organize projects, draft documents, create custom tools, build shareable apps or games from natural language descriptions, and refine creative writing—all within Google Search's AI Mode. Users access it via the tool menu (+) in AI Mode, which opens a side panel pulling from the web and Google's Knowledge Graph. The feature overlaps with NotebookLM and competes with similar canvas tools from OpenAI and Anthropic, though Google's advantage lies in the massive reach of Google Search.
