<p>Google has announced the Fitbit Air, a screenless fitness band priced at $100, alongside a rebrand of the Fitbit app to Google Health. Pre-orders are open now, with general availability on May 26.</p>
<h2>The Fitbit Air</h2>
<p>The Fitbit Air weighs 12 grams with the band and has no screen or buttons — it’s purely a sensor platform. Google says it’s 25% smaller than the Fitbit Luxe and 50% smaller than the Inspire 3. It tracks 24/7 heart rate, SpO2, HRV, sleep stages, and AFib alerts, and auto-detects workouts. Battery life is rated at up to one week, with fast charging that delivers a full day’s charge in five minutes.</p>
<p>The obvious comparison is Whoop, which pioneered the screenless wearable-plus-subscription model. At $100 for the hardware, Google undercuts Whoop on upfront cost, and the subscription is cheaper too (more on that below).</p>
<p>The device pairs with Pixel Watch and is managed entirely through the companion app.</p>
<h2>The Google Health app</h2>
<p>On May 19, the Fitbit app becomes the Google Health app. The redesigned app has four tabs — Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health — and pulls in data from Fitbit devices, Pixel Watch, Apple Health, and Health Connect. US users can also sync medical records.</p>
<p>Google Fit is being retired. Data migration options are coming later in 2026.</p>
<h2>The Gemini-powered Health Coach</h2>
<p>The more interesting part of this launch is the Health Coach, a Gemini-powered AI agent available through Google Health Premium at $9.99/month. It interprets your sensor data, designs workout plans, analyzes meal photos for nutrition, and can summarize clinical records. This is where Google is clearly placing its bets — the hardware is almost a loss leader for the subscription.</p>
<p>Google is positioning the Fitbit brand as platform-neutral, launching on both iOS and Android rather than tying it to the Pixel ecosystem. That’s a deliberate choice: subscription revenue scales better than hardware sales, and locking users to Android would shrink the addressable market.</p>
<h2>The forced migration</h2>
<p>All existing Fitbit user data must be migrated to Google accounts by May 19. Users who don’t migrate will have their data deleted starting July 15. This is worth paying attention to if you’ve been using Fitbit without a Google account — the window is short. The migration has also drawn GDPR scrutiny in Europe, given the sensitivity of health data moving into Google’s account infrastructure.</p>
